Surfacing by Welding

Surfacing by welding used to evoke a notion of repair.

Over the years, the idea of reconstitution of shape has became more popular as the choice of filling metal grade became an increasingly significant criterion; the behaviour in service of the repaired part can now be enhanced.

This notion of surfacing by welding has been integrated into design procedures to limit the areas in which the metal needs to have special properties (hard or stainless steel surfacing), using less expensive materials for the remaining construction.

As with heat joining, surfacing technologies are constantly developing and can be used to prolong the service life of parts with high service loads.

In addition to fatigue and corrosion, wear is one of the main causes of part scrapping in the industry.


Reducing the part wear rate (either in a preventive or corrective manner) may consequently result in substantial economy of material and energy, and may prolong part service life.

Application of a surfacing technology firstly requires good understanding of the wear phenomenon to which the parts are subjected.
